Sabonis Videos,
Posters and Bobbleheads, OH MY! click here!
May 19, 2003
Hello fellow Sabonites!
Just a couple things as we settle into
the postseason.
Oregonlive.com has a
fan
poll going, to gather what fans think about all 12 players on the Blazers'
roster, our coach and the GM. Sabas' vote went well as expected, as all
fans that voted, 96% of them decided to keep Sabonis.
the comments by Crazy Fan from Idaho, SmoovePersian, myself and other Blazer
fans.
Don't forget to sign up for
our forum to keep
on ALL Sabonis news!
So before I go I leave you with a letter I received from one of my Sabonis
penpals, check it out-
> Hi Stuart
>
> What a great guy you are to put so much time and effort to
create this amazing Sabas Web page and keep all of us informed about
Sabas activities, his acomplishments, and most of all allowing Sabas'
fans to air out their opinions about "The Great Sabas". I was 4
years old when I left Lithuania, now I am 67 year old man living in
Los Angeles, Ca.
In October 1988, when Lithuania was still ocupied by the Soviet
Union, Sabonis visited the Portland Trail Blazers and then came to
Los Angeles for a few days to attend a Lithuanian Fair. After the
festival I got to meet him at a private party, back then he was quite
slim looking and with long hair. I took some pictures of Sabonis and
another great Lithuanian basketball player Frank Lubin who was the
team captain of the USA basketball team that won the Gold medal back
at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
On October 4, 1988 Washington Post published a lengthy write up
about these 2 great basketball players. Stuart, perhaps you know how
to extract this great article from the Washington Post archives, I
still have a copy of the article but it's wrinkled and slightly
discolored, my photo of these two men was also published. Enclosed
are a few excerpts from the "Washington Post":
"When the Soviet men's basketball team knocked out the United
States team out of contention for the Olympic gold medal last week,
at least one American television viewer was proud.
'My team, the Lithuanian team, beat the Americans,' said Frank
Lubin, a member of the 1936 U.S. team that won the first Olympic
basketball title in Berlin and the man who started the Lithuanian
basketball dynasty that led to the Soviet triumph this year. (Most
starters on that Soviet team were Lithuanian - Romas.)
Last summer, when Sabonis came to America for workouts and knee
rehabilitatin with the Portland Trail Blazers, who had drafted him
last year, the Lithuanian Americans in the Los Angeles area ivited
the Soviet star to visit . Sabonis came, Lubin said, and asked to
see Pranas Lubinas.
Sabonis speaks almost no English, and Lubin had forgotten his
Lithuanian, so their communication was limited. They exchanged
presents, and Lubin said he told the giant Soviet Olympian, 'You can
become a milionaire.' Sabonis, he said, replied, 'Good, Good'."
Here we are 2003 and Sabas is a millionaire and on the home
strech. Go, Go Arvydas! I really think he can play another 5 years,
hopefully for the Los Angeles Lakers, ha, ha, that will never happen,
but it's wishful thinking.
Best regards, to you Stuart and all the Sabas fans, good luck
with all the good dedicated work you do to all the Sabas fans, the
Lithuanians love you, keep up the good work.

May 04, 2003 -- The Blazers show HEART, Sabonis shows the world.
No
matter how the game ended, I believe the Blazers showed HEART in forcing a game seven after
being down 0-3. This is the proudest I have been of the Blazers during the
last four years.
I don't honestly believe they could have gone
very far in these playoffs even had they won this game. They found
intensity and stability a little too late in the playoffs and Dallas showed the
teamwork and gut after developing and fine-tuning themselves during the regular
season. Hopefully this will make the Blazers hungrier for next year.
The better team won today.
Good luck Dallas.
Arvydas Sabonis continued his great play by playing a
series high 32 minutes. He kept the Blazers in the game during the first
half.
He ended up with 16pts on 8-13FG, 8 rebounds, 3
blocks, 2 assists, 2 steals and several thousand more fans (as evidenced by 10X
the visitors to this site)
Instead of looking slow and immobile as he can
sometimes, he made the Mavericks look helpless every time he touched the ball.
His skill, understanding, and feel for the game shined as brightly as it has
anytime this season.
Good timing.
He was classic Sabonis as he held off Najera with one
hand while grabbing a rebound with the other, all without leaving the ground.
He took a lob pass from Stoudamire, tapped it to himself, palmed it with one
hand and passed it back to Stoudamire for a three. He hit jump shots,
forced his way inside, and dunked. He took a high-post feed, turned his
back to the basket and threw it over his head to Bonzi Wells, who was
fouled.
My friends and I jumped out of our chairs when we saw
this. I laughed and clapped, hardly able to contain myself.
The Blazers on the bench seemed as they felt the
same, they too were all smiling and laughing.
It was nice to see Sabas showing what he could
still do at age 38, displaying the skills that
made many consider him the best big man in the world
when during the 1980s.
This time last year, I thought I would
never see Sabonis play again, that I would never feel the joy of seeing the
Lithuanian giant make passes reserved for point guards
two feet shorter and two hundred pounds lighter.
I thought the next time I would his silky set-shots, bowling-ball passes or
text-book hooks would be old footage or in my head.
All in all, It was great to see Sabas again this year,
hopefully he showed the organization what a valuable asset he can be. And
hopefully Sabonis wants to return He has mentioned several times that he
has had a lot of fun this year but the fact remains, he is seperated from his
wife and children.
So Sabas, go home and get rested, enjoy your family and
home country. We want you back here in October.

May 03, 2003 -- Potential Blooms
Things
couldn't go more right than last night. The Blazers were on their game and
Sabas couldn't have played a better 12 minutes. OK, instead of going
7-8 from the field, he could have went 8-8.
You devil's advocates really get
on my nerves.
The Mavericks were completely blitzed last night. After getting into
the game early after Dale Davis appeared to have pulled his groin, Sabonis came
in and on his first touch, epitomized the night. He got the lob pass in
the post, turned and jammed it home.
The Blazers were all on the same page and lead by 26 points at halftime.
Sabo had 8pts on 4-5FG, 6 rebs and 1 asst at intermission.
I didn't expect to see Sabas again but Zach Randolph couldn't keep his head
straight, so to cheers, Sabas got up and added some icing on the cake.
First he got a nice pass from Jeff McInnis for a layup, then he hit two
free-throws after being fouled in the post. Sabo then whizzed a nice pass
to Pippen, only to get it back. Sabas then faked Evan Eschmeyer up in the
air with a pump fake and drove in for a BEAUTIFUL sweeping hook.
Last but not least, Antionio Daniels drove the lane, spun and saw Arvydas
stomping towards the basket. He received the pass took two huge steps and
flushed it.
The crowd went wild, following my lead of course.
Sabonis finished with 16pts on 7-8FG 2-2FT, 8rebs, 1blk, and 1 asst.
All this in 12 measly minutes. Amazing as always.
Game 7 is on Sunday May 4
- ABC 12pm PST.
Go Blazers.

May 01, 2003 -- "ARVYDAS SABONIS TIPS IT IN!"
I couldn't catch the game
in realtime due to a prior engagement and I got in pretty late, so I promised myself that
the next morning I would check the boxscore, recap and a couple forums to see
how Sabonis and the Blazers did, updating if necessary.
I did record the game
and as I went to shut off the VCR, I couldn't help but rewind the tape a little
and watch the last quarter of the game.
I have no self-control.
Lots of ups and downs with Dallas taking a big lead only to have the Blazers
comeback in a barrage of three-pointers. It was nice to see Wallace being
aggressive on offense, though I would have preferred him not to shoot so many
threes. The Blazers had a two point lead after Nowitzki split a pair at
the line. With about 33 seconds left in the game, the Blazers inbounded the ball for perhaps the most important possession of the series.
I was watching Sabonis the whole time on that last offensive play... the Mavs were
intense and frantically trying to find their defensive assignments in the zone. I watched
Bonzi get the ball
at the three-point line, I thought to myself "Sabas is going to have great
position for the rebound" With Dirk playing off Sabonis, Najera looked as
he was the only one defending both Sabas and Zach Randolph. Wells drove on Nick
Van Exel and as he got up to the elbow, Dirk hesitated to help, leaving Sabo to
position his 7-3 345lb frame for an offensive rebound. Bonzi shot the ball
and Dirk hustled back inside, trying to regain position on our favorite
Lithuanian. The ball bounced off the rim, then off the backboard and with
Dirk trying to push against Sabonis' back, Sabo jumped up maybe 3 inches and
tipped the ball in.
The Blazers were now up 4 with
about 10 seconds left.
He turned and pumped his fist
in controlled excitement as we know Sabo to do.
After Nash fired up a wild,
leaning three, and the rebound bounced off Najera's leg, the Blazers walked out
knowing they were headed back to the comforts of the Rose Garden.
I watched as Maurice Cheeks
screamed in ecstacy with both fists clenched, Rasheed was shouting what looked
like obscenities, Bonzi and Reuben congratulated each other with high-fives, and
Zach Randolph jumped up and down towards the visitors' tunnel. So where
was Sabas? As his teammates celebrated
around him, he wallked along the scorers table, strolling off the court stoic as
ever.
Thus is Arvydas Sabonis.
Way to go Big Red.
We see you. Go Blazers.

April 26 2003 The Playoffs
After barely seeing anytime in the first two losses against
the Mavs, Maurice Cheeks decided to try something different and played Sabas a
little more in game 3. Arvydas Sabonis brought his "A"
game last night in game 3 between the Blazers and Mavericks. On the offensive end
he was nearly unstoppable, its too bad his teammates couldn't match
his focus and relative intensity. Sabonis hooked his way to 16 points
(5-7FG, 6-7FT) 4 rebounds and 1 steal in only 14 minutes!
No wonder he was ranked in the top 10 in efficiency per 48 minutes during the
regular season with the likes of Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and Tracy McGrady. |
March 06, 2003
I was in Portland last Friday and was lucky enough to attend the LA Clippers game. In short I had a blast. After 3+ years of nurturing our reIationship I was finally able to meet Crazy Fan from Idaho. We cheered, she screamed, we used our little noise sticks and Sabo didn't disappoint with 12pts, 4rebs, 2asts and a block. Oh yeah and the Blazers won.
CFFI and I were able to exchange gifts, one being an issue of Rip City featuring an interview with Sabas himself check it out, its a pretty in-depth article + I worked my tail off to transcribe it. You can thank me later.
I know many of you have asked me for t-shirts featuring our lumbering Lith and at that time I didn't have any, now, after my trip to PDX, I may fulfill some of your wishes. They aren't anything too special essentially a black shirt that mirrors a Sabonis' Trailblazer jersey. They're cool nonetheless. Email me at sabonisfan@hotmail.com if you're interested (I only have a few).

January 30, 2003 LABAS! Hello!
Welcome all you fans from coming from NBA.com's Sabonis webpage!
I'd like to reiterate that some of the archive links (specifically the articles and images) are not fully functioning, this is in due part to a semi-recent domain name switch and my laziness.
I would also like to invite all the new Sabonis fans to our message board where you can learn all the new Sabonis news, links and mentions supported by fans all humbly calling themselves the biggest Sabonis fans in the world (yes i'm talking about you CFFI, Mayte, Amir, Robert, and of course, myself). Someday we'll have a contest a la Fear Factor to figure it out.
I've added a new video of Sabonis finger-rolling against the Denver Nuggets, much thanks goes to Ripct for the video.
The OregonLive.com calls Arvydas Sabonis "The Crowd Favorite" in their midseason report.
Scottie Pippen earns the first half MVP, Rasheed is a "tease", Bonzi's the bomb, McInnis a disappoinment, Stoudamire is the "Ghost"
THE CROWD FAVORITE - Arvydas Sabonis
"The hook shot, the behind-the-back passes, the standing rebounds -- fans at the Rose Garden love him, and so does Cheeks, who admitted that he didn't know what he was getting when the Blazers coaxed Sabonis out of his one-year hiatus. Sabonis has been everything the Blazers dreamed of and more. The Blazers are clearly a better team when he is on the court, in part because of his passing. He recently has been told to shoot, which has added to his game. The question entering the season was how his 38-year-old body would hold up, but he has missed only three games (sore hamstring) and has showed surprising stamina, with 12 games of 20 or more minutes, including a season-high 31 minutes last week in Memphis."

January 04, 2003 - Sabonis goes crazy!
Many thanks goes to ripct from FanHome for making this possible!
Not very often do we get to watch Sabas in the national spotlight, his exposure is even further reduced these days as he is more of a role player than ever, you add in the fact that they rarely wear the road-red-retro jerseys and the game against the Celtics was a once in a blue moon kinda thing.
Last night Sabonis showed old form, in the shape of a up-and-under layup (plus the foul) and with a dunk heard 'round the world.
The best thing is, I spoke with another Blazer fanatic yesterday
and he (Ripct) was more than happy to share with me those aforementioned highlights. You can find them in the "files" section of our forum.
You will have to join the group in order to download the video, but its well worth it.
Believe me, for Sabonis is life and life is Sabonis.
And for those of you linking from plastic.com to see the old Sabonis footage. You'll have to go through the same, just join our forum, click on "files" and
old-school Arvydas Sabonis will be but a click away... as will the above footage.
Once again, my thanks to Ripct for NONE of this would have been possible without him.

Arvydas Sabonis (222-C-64, agent: Rudoy Herb) is the most known European basketball player, who had the biggest influence on the NBA ever of all other European players. Here is an interview he agreed to have with Eurobasket yesterday.
Eurobasket: First congratulations of beating Pistons at Detroit. The game just ended 20 minutes ago and Trail Blazers surprisingly upset Pistons at home.
Arvydas: That was really good game. Now we have to focus on a game against Chicago.
Eurobasket: Why have you decided to come back to the NBA this season?
Arvydas: When I had a break last year, whenever I was talking to Trail Blazers coaches, I was constantly being asked to join back the team. Finally I consulted it with my family and since my shape allowed me to come back on the court, I decided to try again. I do not hide financial side was important too. But that's how we make money for living, so that must be very understandable.
Eurobasket: Did not you have any interesting offers from Europe for this year?
Arvydas: Yes, I had. But NBA is the first option for every player, so that was also my case.
Eurobasket: With your great experience, you could be very useful for any team. What are your plans for coming season and how long are you planning to keep playing?
Arvydas: That's the question I cannot give definite answer. I am 37, so I am not in a shape I was few years ago. Some back pain is also a factor in making any decision about the future. That's why I have to focus only on this season. It's a big question if I would play for much longer. But that would be very good to finish my career playing in Lithuania for Zalgiris, the club which I am so much linked to.
Eurobasket: Lithuanian basketball seems to have not so many international successes since Olympic Games in Sydney. Do you think it's the lack of talented players, coaching or something else?
Arvydas: I do not think it's lack of talent or not proper coaching. Here the problem is with players mentality. When I was still active member of Lithuanian National Team, we had a group of players, who were extremely motivated (not only from financial point) to represent our country. But when players and more focused on playing for their clubs and do not want to be involved in national team, there is the point where problems start. Our federation faces difficult situation to call the top players who play in most cases abroad. That did not use to be like that before.
Eurobasket: Have you had any problems with your over-popularity out of the court, while being in Lithuania?
Arvydas: I have been always taller than others, so that was very easy to spot me. However previously I was just tall, but not too many people knew me. Then when my career developed in a very successful way, people started to recognize me on the street. It's not like I do not like to deal with fans, I am very open person and appreciate the attention. But there was no way that a person tall like me could just walk in the middle of Kaunas and not being noticed by the others. But that's the part of my profession, so I used to deal with that.
Eurobasket: Do you use Internet?
Arvydas: Yes, I like checking what fans are writing. I wish I could do that more often. But in my job we have to travel often, so I do that mostly when I am in Portland.
Eurobasket:
Thank you for the interview and let me wish you Happy New Year.
Arvydas: Thank you and also best wishes to Eurobasket and all people checking it all over the world especially in Lithuania.

Sabo records his first double-double (10pts, 10 rbs, 3assts, 1stl, 1blk in 23 mins!) of the season in a loss to the Mavs.
The man is still very capable.
Although I love his hooks, I would gladly trade in 2 hook shots for
one behind the head, behind the back, or bowling ball pass. I taped
the Lakers-Blazers game opening day and watched it the other night. He
looks so much bigger, especially his head!
Anyways, there was a stretch in the game where
the Blazers posted him 4-5 straight times that was just amazing- a
bonzi post pass to Sabonis who palmed the ball with one hand and just
as the defender thought he was in the clear Sabo lobs it to Bonzi who
gets fouled. Next was a bowling ball pass to a cutting Antonio
Daniels who got fouled, a pick and roll with McInnis where Sabo
picked, handed off the ball and McInnis hit the jumper. THEN, Sabo
throws a one-handed-backwards-shuffle-bounce pass to a cutting Bonzi for a
lefty layup and the foul. And finally the coup de grace, a patented behind
the back pass to a cutting Bonzi underneath the hoop. Poor rookies
Janero Pargo and Kareem Rush never knew what hit'em.
It seems as if ESPN loves showing Sabo as much as NBC did. I'm never
seen so many closeups! Loved the standing ovation he received when
he checked in.
As always, much thanks to CFFI for keeping the news on our forum while I was gone,
although I am still jetlagged, I will do my best
with the site!

Sabonis’ return to town generates sigh of relief
He may be a little rusty, but the Blazers aren’t complaining
BY KERRY EGGERS The Tribune
Arvydas Sabonis received a pass on the high post, bounced a couple of dribbles, then sent a behind-the-back pass to a cutting Zach Randolph. Two points.
A moment later, in a scrimmage at the Blazers’ training facility in Tualatin, the 7-3, 315-pound Lithuanian missed on a short jumper. He reached over two defenders leapt would be an inappropriate verb
and followed in his own shot for a basket.
There are things Sabonis can do, even as he approaches 38, that few others can do on the basketball court.
"I’m ready to fight him for not being here last year," coach Maurice Cheeks says, grinning. "I’m glad to see Sabonis here, man, passing, rebounding, making shots. I welcome every second he’s on the court."
Sabonis, creaky-legged and at times rusty from a year away, probably will play 15 to 20 minutes a night, and he will have to take a game off here and there to rest his achy bones. But he provides a presence the Blazers didn’t have last year.
We missed Arvydas’ size and expertise and things he brings to the game,” veteran Scottie Pippen says. “We fell by the wayside a little bit. It’s great to have him back.
After averaging 10.1 points and 5.5 rebounds for Portland in 2000-01 lows in his six seasons with the Blazers — Sabonis elected to take a year off, dividing time with his family between Spain and Lithuania.
"My last season in Portland was a hard season, for the team, for me, for everybody," he says. "Maybe I needed to get away from everything. I did nothing for eight months. For five months, it was good. Interesting, something new.
Then he got bored.
"All my life I have been organized — wake up, work out, play basketball," he says.
In the summer, the Blazers called to see if he was interested in a comeback. About the same time, the Lakers contacted his agent, Herb Rudoy, with an offer to play behind Shaquille O’Neal for the three-time defending NBA champions. But they could pay him only the veteran’s minimum — for a six-year veteran, $762,435 for one year — while the Blazers could employ the Larry Bird exception to give him the moon. Sabonis wound up with a three-year deal, the last two option years for both himself and the team, he says. He will make $7 million this season.
It wasn’t the money, Sabonis says.
"I heard about the Lakers’ offer, but I didn’t think it was real," he says. "When the Blazers were interested, that was it. I was here before. I knew everybody."
Rudoy says the Lakers’ interest was real, but it never got serious, "because all Sabas wanted to do was return to Portland."
Sabonis began workouts only about a month before camp.
"Of course, I am not in good enough shape," says Sabonis, whose weight is down from a peak of 340.
"Mentally good, but physically, I need work."

Sabonis impresses Blazers coach Cheeks
Associated Press
TUALATIN, Ore. -- Maurice Cheeks gushed about one of the new guys on the second day of Portland Trail Blazers training camp.
This was no flashy rookie, though. The coach was excited about a 37-year-old, six-year NBA veteran: Arvydas Sabonis.
The 7-foot-3 center, who missed Cheeks' first year with the Blazers last season during a one-year retirement, scrimmaged for the first time Wednesday. The nearly 300-pound Lithuanian looked surprisingly good for this early in camp.
"We had a great practice today,'' Cheeks said. "A lot of energy, a lot of guys participating and getting to see more of Sabonis. I'm loving every minute of that.''
Likewise, Sabonis' teammates seemed pleased to have the big man back.
While his jump shot was a little flat -- a typical side effect from a long layoff, not to mention still being a few weeks away from game shape -- Sabonis showed off his passing abilities from the low post. On consecutive plays he delivered a behind-the-back bounce pass to Bonzi Wells for a backdoor dunk and whipped a touch-pass into the corner for a baseline jumper by Zach Randolph.
"He's a great passer out of the post, he's always been a great passer,'' guard Damon Stoudamire said. "Sabas is looking good right now. He played well today in practice, he did a lot of good things. One thing with him is you've got to keep on moving ... he likes to get people involved.''
The Blazers haven't yet had a full-court scrimmage, and Sabonis hasn't had to run up and down the court -- which is where his aching joints will take the most pounding.
"In a half-court set, he's always going to be great,'' Stoudamire said. "He's a great half-court basketball player.''
Said Cheeks: "When Sabonis has the ball, you feel like you're going to get the ball back for layups or whatever when you cut. He's always looking to pass the ball, and when he doesn't pass, he can make the jump shot.
"When we have a guy like that who has the weapons that he has, it's pretty good.''
Sabonis will likely come off the bench, and while Cheeks doesn't want to put a hard limit on how many minutes he'll play, the goal is to keep him fresh and get the most out of him when he does play.
"I think he makes our field goal percentage go up,'' Cheeks said. "He gives guys layups, and that's big for guys like Damon who have a little trouble getting to the rim.''

SABAS UPDATE 092102 (MULTI-YEAR BLISS)
It's Saturday and it's sunny outside. On a whim I walk into a internet cafe and to my surprise, I find that Arvydas Sabonis has re-signed with the Blazers.
Unfortunately, I am in Rosarito, Mexico.
...and thus I cannot update my site... so here I sit paying $3.00 an hour to bring you the joy from Southern America.
But its about time.
After grueling weeks upon grueling weeks of waiting and after a year off of absolutely no Sabonis. And after a frustrating last year with the Blazers in 2001.
Sabonis is home with the Blazers once again. Reportedly with a multi-year contract. Check out the details yourself...

Well it's been about a couple weeks and finally something to keep us happy...
No deal yet, but Sabonis close to signing with Blazers, agent says
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Center Arvydas Sabonis is reportedly close to rejoining the Portland Trail Blazers after a year off, but the team said Monday night that no deal has been signed.
The one-year contract on the table reportedly would pay Sabonis $7 million. Agent Herb Rudoy told The Oregonian the deal was close to completion.
But the Trail Blazers said late Monday night that no contract had been signed.
"We have not signed him," team spokesman Mike Hanson told The Associated Press. "We are still optimistic we will get a deal done."
The Trail Blazers have been optimistic about wooing the 7-foot-3 center back to the NBA since he visited with team officials this summer and worked out with some of the players.
"The deal has been agreed upon in principal," Rudoy told The Oregonian. "There are problems, and hopefully all will be completed this week."
Rudoy could not be reached for comment by The Associated Press Monday night.
Sabonis played six seasons with the Trail Blazers. After the team's disappointing 2000-01 season, in which he averaged 10.1 points and 5.4 rebounds but missed 21 games because of injuries or soreness, he opted not to renew his contract. He also had broken bones in his left foot from a non-basketball injury.
Because Sabonis did not play for another team last season and because the Blazers did not renounce their rights to him, Portland retains what is referred to as his "Larry Bird rights." That means the Trail Blazers are not limited in what they can offer Sabonis.
The Trail Blazers can use his services. General manager Bob Whitsitt said at the end of this season that he would like to shore up the team at center and in the backcourt.
Portland addressed their backcourt in the offseason by trading with San Antonio for the services of guard Antonio Daniels, then signing free agent guard Jeff McInnis on Monday.
Sabonis, with his size, could give the team a boost at center, although he is not expected to start ahead of Dale Davis.

Sabonis Speaks out to Tell what Everybody Knew: He Will Play for Portland
As expected, Arvydas Sabonis has opted for playing on Trail Blazers this year.
KAUNAS – Finally Arvydas Sabonis made his first public statement during his present stay in Lithuania, confirming what had been in the air for a while, i.e. that next season he will play at Portland. While answering questions by his young fans and by some media members during his annual visit to a children camp near Kaunas, the Lithuanian basketball legend told that in a couple of days he would sign a 1+1 contract with his former NBA team, at 7 million USD first year. On the occasion, Arvydas Sabonis reiterated his promise to play one year on Žalgiris team before the end of his career. This might happen in the 2003-2004 season, if the player will decide to not opt for the second year in Portland. “I do not know if I will be able to stay more than one year over there,” said he, also making reference to the circumstance that his family is not going to join him in his new American adventure and instead will continue to live in Torremolinos.
Commenting on his choice, Sabonis said that, besides a bigger money, Portland had an advantage over Malaga in that in the NBA the burden of responsibility he expects to be exposed to should be considerably lesser than in Spain.

SABONIS LAYS HIS CARDS ON THE TABLE WHILE SPEAKING TO CAMP ATTENDANTS

37 years old 220 cm height Sabonis will sign 7 millions of dollars deal for one year with Portland Trail Blazers. All contract details are agreed. The deal is ready, and he's waiting for putting his signature on it. He should receive contract papers in Monday (by mail).
"This might be one of the last deals in my career, so I have to take the opportunity.", Sabonis said.
THE DECISION WASN"T HARD
Two main rivals were "Unicaja" and Portland. Unicaja offered 3 millions euros 1 year deal and a help to his basketball school for children in Kaunas, Portland offered 10 million dollars 2 years deal.
By Sabonis' request, the deal will be signed only for one year.
he said: "It's you, journalists who were puzzled the whole summer. I was calm. Everything was clear the moment I got the offer from Portland."
He also admitted, he wasn't expecting interest in him from nba teams this year.
When asked what was the greatest factor to make the decision he said:
"I don't like to change clubs. When I've arrived in Portland, memories came back to me. Everything is familiar over there. Also NBA is world's best league. Obviously, money was a factor, as well as a lesser work load."
Sabonis said that Unicaja promised to keep him not overloaded with work but he didn't trust them. He said:
"You have less games in Europe, but the work load at exercises is quite large. If I won't be the locomotive power, the press will start writing things, etc. On the other hand in Portland you have more games but lighter exercises. Besides, we agreed I'll play 20 minutes per game."
The deal states, there's a possibility to extend it for one more year if both sides agree.
Sabonis admitted, he was almost to finish his career last year, but after 9 idle months he felt he missed the ball too much. He said:
"After a year we'll see if I'm in health and wish for more, also if someone is interested in me."
Once again he confirmed to play his career's last season in Zalgiris though.
FAMILY WILL STAY IN SPAIN
Sabonis will leave to Portland alone. His wife Ingrida and 4 children will stay in Spain. Two eldest Sabonis' sons attend a school in Spain. At this moment the whole Sabonis family is in Lithuania, they arrived over here to participate in his brother's wedding.
THERE WERE OTHER DEALS OFFERED
There were some more teams interested in Sabonis this summer. "Real" from Madrid fell off competition early, because they had no time to wait for Sabonis' decision.
There was some interest from Los Angeles Lakers as well. Their managers wanted someone who's solid and well familiar with nba to change ocassionally O'Neal. Sabonis said he wasn't even considering this offer, though, even if he would have avoided hard jostle with "four doors cupboard" as he called O'Neale if he took the offer.
He said: "I will wrestle with this "cupboard" if there's a need to, but I certainly don't want to change the team"
ALWAYS UP-FRONT WHEN TALKING TO CHILDREN
He always visits this summer children basketball camp if he's over here. Also he's traditionally very up-front when talking to children.
He said how much he will make next season in Portland. Then said that almost half of this summ will be paid for taxes.
He promised after finishing his career to stay at Lithuania more frequently, also to take a good care of his basketball school for children in Kaunas.
